VA Launches New Prevention Initiative to Serve 22,000 Veteran Families at Risk of Homelessness
By unitedweroll on Jul 26, 2011 | In Military News and Support
There are a few non-profits that have been formed to help our Veterans who are struggling to stay in their homes and to keep their families off the streets. Veterans For Change is just one where Vets are helping Vets and ask for your help, too. Too many of our Heroes of Freedom are still waiting for their VA Claims to be processed for their disabilities as result of combat duty, and they are not able to pay utilities, rent or even the cost of gas to get to their treatments. PLEASE GET INVOLVED. If enough of us participate, it would take only a few dollars from each of us to help many of our Veterans and their families. Shouldn't it be an honor and our responsibility to help those who are in need because they protected our freedom?
VA Launches New Prevention Initiative to Serve 22,000 Veteran Families at Risk of Homelessness
Announces Nearly $60 Million in Homeless Prevention Grants Nationwide
WASHINGTON (July 26, 2011) - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.
Shinseki announced today the award of nearly $60 million in homeless prevention grants that will serve approximately 22,000 homeless and at-risk Veteran families as part of the new Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This initial $60 million award will serve Veteran families at 85 non-profit community agencies in 40 states and the District of Columbia under VA's new homeless prevention initiative.
"This new homeless prevention program will provide additional comprehensive support to Veterans who have served honorably, and now find themselves in a downward spiral toward despair and homelessness,"
said VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki. "This program expands our capacity to act before a Veteran becomes homeless and to target the problem of family homelessness. These grants would not have been possible without the extraordinary partnerships forged with community organizers who are firmly committed to making a positive difference in lives of Veterans
and their families."
The SSVF Program, a critical element of VA's plan to prevent and end homelessness among Veterans, will promote housing stability among homeless and at-risk Veterans and their families. Under the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that can provide a range of supportive services to eligible very low-income Veteran families. Supportive services include outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits, and assistance in obtaining and coordinating other public benefits.
Grantees will also have the ability to make time-limited temporary financial assistance payments on behalf of Veterans for purposes such as rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs.

Tuesday 7/26/11 2:00pm – 3:30pm Central (Live)
Wednesday 7/27/11 6:30pm – 8:00pm Central (Repeat)
Welcome Stardust Listeners! Thank you for joining us on United We Roll
Tuesday, the 26th day of July, 2011.
On today's show, we will check in with two deployed members, one from the Army and one from the Air Force members. Then we will also visit with a Marine who is out of the service and making the transition into civilian life. Remember, if you are not able to stay with us through the afternoon today, this show will repeat again tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27th at 6:30pm Central.
(2:11pm) We start off with a very inspirational visit with Army SSG Jermaine Hollis, who is deployed in Iraq with HHC (Headquarters and Headquarters Company), 299th BSB (Brigade Support Battalion), 2-1 AAB (Advise and Assist Brigade).
(2:43pm) Our next visit takes us to Transit Center Manas in Kyrgyzstan to speak with TSG Eric Lacroix who is deployed there with the 376th EMG (Expeditionary Maintenance Group).
(3:20pm) I am sure we see the news reports almost every day where many of our Vets are returning home, leaving the service and trying to find jobs to move back into the civilian life. Making the transition is not easy and employment is not a simple thing to find. Our next guest, Craig Siwarga, recently left the Marines where he was a Staff Sergeant to make a new life in the civilian world with the help of a new Soldiers Angels program called SAVE – Save A Veterans Employment. www.soldiersangels.org
We would like to express our appreciation to some folks without whom the visits this week would not be possible. Our deepest appreciation goes to Army CPT Selina Tolonen and Air Force TSgt Tammie Moore.
As always, our hearts and prayers go out to all of our military members, families, Veterans and to all of our first responders & their families - everyone who puts their lives on hold and on the line for us and our families.
We thank our listeners for tuning in and keeping in touch with our Heroes of Freedom as they share their experiences and thoughts with us at home. From the volunteers here at United We Roll and Stardust Radio, we wish all of you a safe and happy week.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL & MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Newly Developed Theater Security Cooperation Division at TC Manas Is On The Job
We have had the honor to speak with a few of the military members who have been hard at work developing this new unit at Transit Center Manas. Most recently (show on July 12th), we spoke with LTC John Elshaw, Director of the TSC, who gave us a great overview of the areas that this new team will cover in their daily operations.

4/26/2011 - TRANSIT CENTER AT MANAS, Kyrgyzstan (AFNS) -- Transit Center officials and the assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and Reserve affairs stood up the Theater Security Cooperation Division April 23 here as part of an ongoing effort to build and expand relationships with global partners.
Daniel B. Ginsberg toured the transit center and held an all-hands call after the ceremony.
"This is an historic day for both the Transit Center at Manas, as well as for the people of the Kyrgyz Republic," he said. "This afternoon, we dedicate and open a facility that will provide much needed support and engagement in this very important part of the world.
"It was once said, 'If you want to be incrementally better, be competitive. If you want to be exponentially better, be cooperative,'" Mr. Ginsberg continued. "This statement captures perfectly the mission of the Transit Center's new theater security cooperation division. The TSC will strive tirelessly to build bridges and uncover solutions to important issues for both the United States and the people of Kyrgyzstan."
The ceremony also marked the end of a 10-month process to create the division that focuses on community partnership to enhance and secure the peace in Kyrgyzstan.
Lt. Col. John Elshaw, the TSC director, said the division is also gearing up for the future.
"In the past, we would provide humanitarian assistance anywhere we could," he said. "Now we're drafting operating instructions, setting standards and procedures to sustain this operation for the future."
Colonel Elshaw said the process included assistance from the Army civil affairs program as a waypoint for current operations in the TSC. He said working with local high-ranking Kyrgyz government officials to organize and plan projects is at the top of the priorities list.
"We're organizing continuity folders and standardizing a process to submit official requests for assistance and working with the local rayons, the Chui Oblast, and the administrative district in Bishkek to work on the main priorities in the area," he said.
The TSC has three primary missions designed to enhance the security and relations of the U.S. and Kyrgyzstan. The three mission types are humanitarian assistance, military-to-military operations, and social cultural operations.
The concept of TSC in the Air Force goes back as early as the Korean War with follow-up operations in every major conflict which followed officials said. The specifics of each mission set were slightly different but always focused on the requirements of the host nation.
"Over the next six months, we're trying to turn this into a self-sustaining operation and make it work for the long term," Colonel Elshaw said.
Mr. Ginsberg said the quality of life and information exchange facilitated by the TSC will continue to build friendships and partnerships between the United States and Kyrgyzstan for many years to come.
"Just three months ago, the theater security cooperation mission was the responsibility of just a few individuals," he said. "Today, there are 25 people reaching out to Kyrgyz governmental organizations to include: the ministry of defense, ministry of health, and ministry of internal affairs.
"This team provided critical medical treatment for more than 3 million school children and many adults through a nation-wide deworming program," he concluded. "This program touched the lives of nearly 60 percent of Kyrgyzstan's entire population. The positive impact will be felt for years and generations to come."

(2:12pm) We will start off our visits with Army SFC Patrick Noling who is on deployment with 3rd Platoon, A Co, 1st Bn, 63rd AR, 2/1 AAB at Camp Liberty in Iraq. I will give you a heads up that the sound quality is not the best, but then conditions during these calls is not always the best, either.
(2:46pm) Our next visit is truly inspirational as we speak with Air Force SSG Diamond Edwards who is serving with the 376th ECS (Expeditionary Communications Squadron). SSG Edwards shares a great deal of interesting information about his present mission as a Project Manager, and how he came to be in this service.
We would like to express our appreciation to some folks without whom the visits this week would not be possible. Our deepest appreciation goes to Air Force TSgt Tammie Moore and Army CPT Selina Tolonen.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20110719-03 July 19, 2011
_______________________________________________________________
‘Vanguard’ Battalion patrols with 9th Iraqi Army Division to deter indirect fire attacks
By Spc. William A. Joeckel, 2nd AAB, 1st Inf. Div., USD-C
BAGHDAD—Soldiers with Company A, 1st “Vanguard” Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center, stationed at Camp Taji, Iraq, and their 9th Iraqi Army Division partners, are working to ensure enemy forces realize their indirect fire attacks on U.S. bases do not go unnoticed.
Members of violent extremist networks occasionally attempt to launch such attacks—using mortars and rockets—from areas near bases. It is up to Soldiers who patrol these areas to deter attacks and promote a sense of partnered U.S. and Iraqi Army presence in these locations. With that in mind, Soldiers with Company A and their 9th IA Div. counterparts conducted a joint patrol July 9 near Camp Taji.
“We look for anything that seems out of the ordinary, that poses a threat, such as rocket rails and [Improvised Rocket Assisted Mortars],” said Spc. Michael Spinosa, an infantryman with Company A, 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt. and a Shelton, Conn., native.
Many insurgent groups have established areas from which they launch many of their attacks. U.S. forces track attacks as a way to identify potential locations for future attacks to originate from.
This intelligence is also passed down to the Iraqi Army, who also have the job to inspect suspicious sites in order to deter future attacks.
“Information can be obtained from the Iraqi Army and used if it can be verified,” said Pfc. Ronald Hegedus, an intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt. and a Sierra Vista, Ariz., native. In addition, we give information to the Iraqi Army for the Iraqi Soldiers to use while patrolling.
As the Soldiers of the 9th Iraqi Army Division are stationed in a base that partially surrounds Camp Taji, an attack on U.S. forces here is an attack on Iraqi Soldiers as well. During searches, Soldiers with the 9th IA Div. join Company A Soldiers when they patrol.
“The enemy knows that the U.S. and Iraqi Army patrol these sites, because in a lot of these areas there are personnel that we believe act as lookouts for them,” said Sgt. 1st Class Allen Cottone, an infantryman and a platoon sergeant with Company A, 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt. and a Virginia Beach, Va., native.
Having the 9th IA Div. patrol with Company A not only adds to the size of a patrolling force, but also allows for the Iraqis to get to know the people and the areas for which they are responsible.
“They’re doing a lot better then I saw them doing back in 2008,” Cottone said. “They are heading in the right direction and if they keep doing what they are doing now, they will be prepared when we leave.”
On the most recent patrol, Soldiers with Company A were joined by Command Sgt. Maj. Ray Devens, command sergeant major of the 25th Infantry Division and USD-C.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Devens was able to see how his Soldiers were doing out in sector,” Cottone said. “Instead of just hearing about the work we are doing, he actually saw us performing our job.”
Patrolling near U.S. bases keeps enemy groups on their toes, reducing their opportunity to launch attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces.
“I think it is very important that we keep on doing these missions,” said Spinosa. “I feel that they have a great impact on what the enemy does.”
